In myth of male power, Farrell identifies two types of feminist. Adult and adolescent. Here is what he has to say:
Adult Feminism:
“Part of the womens movement has already initiated that evolutionary shift, that part says I, woman, must take responsibility for what occurs in my life’; that says ‘Don’t kill your husband if he is abusing you, walk away’; the part that encourages women ‘Pick up his dinner cheque as often as he picks up yours’; the part that says ‘Don’t marry up, depend on yourself’; the part that empowers women to the point of being willing to consider loving a man ‘eligible’ even if he expects her to financially support him while he nurtures her. This part of the womens movement is the division of Adult Feminism”
Adolescent Feminism:
“Another part of the womens movement reinforces age-old patterns. The part that wants combat rights, but not combat obligations; that speaks of the ‘glass ceiling’ but not of the ‘glass cellar’; that wants government protection for battered women, but denies even the existence of battered men; the parts that neglects to encourage women to feel as comfortable marrying up as marrying down… The part that only reinforces womens genetic heritage – find a hero, marry him, depend on him; or divorce him and get the government to play substitute husband. It reinforces women discovering a variety of ways to be the victim in order to find a variety of ways to be saved. This part of the womens movement is the division of Adolescent Feminist”
