Break up poems confuse me – I had originally thought that their purpose was to allow teenage girls to read something while sitting around feeling sorry for themselves. I’ve now discovered that some people actually use poetry in their Dear John letters.
Personally, if that happened to me it would simply confirm to me that my ex was an insensitive oaf and that I was lucky to be rid of him. So my advice to anyone considering dumping their partner this way is: don’t! In fact, you should not dump anyone by letter, phone call or text. Face to face is the preferred – but painful – option.
But what is the attraction to love poetry, specifically break up poems, when you have just been ditched? For many, it is a form of therapy at an emotional time, to others it is pure self-indulgence.
I come into the latter category; I just don’t see the point in romanticising a relationship that has ended badly. Much better to be intensively depressed for a day or two and then plan out your way ahead. Accept that the relationship has ended and move on or devise a scheme to win him back. Immersing yourself in sad poetry will not speed up this process.
If you feel that your broken relationship is worth saving it makes more sense to read something that will help you make it happen. Reading sad poetry is depressing and will reduce your ability to win your ex back. Spend time reading something that will empower you to move forward with your life and get over those sad feelings.
